The Pinhoti Trail !

Northern GA

Think of it as a "Super Epic." The Pinhoti Trail covers about 140 miles of prime terrain in northern Georgia . The Georgia Pinhoti Trail Association (GPTA), in conjunction with the Conservation Fund, is continually acquiring land and easements to move as much of the trail to off-road status as possible.

The popular Snake Creek Gap Time Trial Series was instituted to showcase the Pinhoti and introduce it to the MTB community. It is bringing in hundreds of riders a year to North Georgia from as far away as California and Canada and has been recognized as one of the best races in the southeast. The layout of the Pinhoti allows for a cross-country point-to-point race with 17- and 34-mile options, over some very technical singletrack.

The Pinhoti crosses the Blue Ridge fault line south of Chatsworth. East of that you will find the big mountain climbs of the Cohutta. Head west for the Ridge and Valley sections, with numerous ridge climbs and long stretches of ridge-top riding. On the west side there is a current project to build 20 miles of multi-use trail on the Pinhoti at Dry Creek. There's an 8-mile loop in the Pocket area between Horn and John’s Mountain; on the east side the MTB community recognizes 4 major loop rides between Fort Mountain and Bear Creek. In short, the Pinhoti is a unique, long and extremely varied trail that could keep any mountain biker entertained for several riding seasons.

Features:

Long distance trail

Point to point

Out and back

Loops

Varying terrain

Various skill levels

SORBA/IMBA involvement

Various user groups

Various governments

Beautiful

Easy access

Sustainable trail bed

Length: 140 miles.

Possum Trot , Gone ! Deer Crossing , Gone ! Rabbit Run , Gone ! The whole area has been re-worked by the Army Corps of Engineers to make this area flow better and most likely FASTER ! . They pretty much closed the parts of trail with minimal evidence of a trail that had been webed over with spyder yarn and fused together the worn traveled trails to make one big circle made of two halfs, a west leg and an east leg . Nobody likes change but once all get used to the new layout it may become one of the favorites to come ! Here is the new Bartran Trail Lake Springs Loop Map .

New phase of Bartram Trail on into Wildwood Is COMPLETE !

Network grows for biking trails

Outdoor-minded volunteers are expanding a network of mountain bike trails that eventually will link five major recreation areas on the Columbia County side of Thurmond Lake.

The first phase of the trail system was established four years ago, when the corps opened an 8.5-mile trail from the West Dam Recreation Area to the Lake Springs Recreation Area and on to the Petersburg camping area.

"Since the first trails opened, we've gotten more positive responses than anything we've done up here in years," said Tom Lewis, Thurmond Lake's natural resources manager. "The users of these trails also volunteer a lot of their time helping to keep these trails up."

The newest 2.8-mile segment is the first phase of a plan that starts ( where the corps' existing trail ends ) at Petersburg and dead ends at the Columbia County Water Intake Access Dirt Road .( Looks like a powerline clearing with a lone picnic table ) .

Phase 2 will continue the trail into Wildwood Park.

Phase 3 will build a mountain bike trail within Wildwood Park that will integrate into the park's master plan.

Phase 4 will connect Wildwood Park to the existing Keg Creek mountain bike trail .

Future plans could include trail extensions to link Keg Creek Wildlife Management Area to Mistletoe State Park farther up the lake's Little River arm.

Maps of the trails and parking areas -- and details about volunteer opportunities and off-road cycling -- are available at : www.AugustaBomb.com
